Pediatric Emergencies, How to manage?

Introduction:

  • Management of acute asthma exacerbation starts at home.

  • Home then ER management are supposed to push the patient away from ICU.

  • Asthmatic patient in PICU is a real problem as he is always agitated and sedation in such patient is not an easy task.

  • IV steroids, Beta agonist therapy are still the corner stone in asthma management, other lines of treatment such as magnesium sulphate and theophylline infusion are also used.

  • The real challenge is when and how to ventilator such patient.

  • Sedation is difficult and ketamine is the drug of choice.

  • To ventilate and intubate those patients is an art, we try to do it safely.

  • Other important pediatric emergency topics like Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS), and Septic Shock will be introduced.
